Critical Incident Investigations

When officers perceive an imminent threat to citizens, other officers or themselves, they may discharge their weapon. Although officer-involved shootings are not a common occurrence in Louisiana, when these tragic events do occur, it is imperative and in the public interest that the investigation of such incidents be thorough, objective and transparent.

Many law enforcement agencies in Louisiana allow other agencies to participate in critical incident investigations. Utilizing outside assistance in both manpower and resources can promote:

  • A thorough and complete investigation.

  • Transparency that enhances credibility.

  • Comprehensive reports for the District Attorney’s to make decisions.

  • Increased public confidence in the outcomes of such investigations.

Many public agencies have investigative powers to provide oversight in critical incidents involving law enforcement. Some of the entities are Sheriff’s, District Attorney’s, the Attorney General, and the State Police.
